Ever wondered how Skin Fitzpatrick works and what is your Skin Type?

Skin Fitzpatrick scale (also known as Fitzpatrick skin typing test; or Fitzpatrick phototyping scale) is a numerical classification scheme for human skin colour. It was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick as a way to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light.

It was initially developed on the basis of skin and eye colour, but when this proved misleading, it was altered to be based on the person’s reports of how their skin responds to the sun; it was also extended to a wider range of skin types. The Fitzpatrick scale remains a recognized tool for dermatological research into human skin pigmentation.

Below is a guide on your Fitzpatrick scale:

  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Never tan, always burn (usually very fair skin, blonde hair, blue/green eyes.  Populations: Europeans
  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Sometimes tan, but usually burn (fair skin, light brown or chestnut hair, green/hazel eyes.  Populations: Europeans
  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Usually tan, but sometimes burn (light olive skin, chestnut hair, hazel eyes.  Populations: Europeans
  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Always tan, never burn (olive skin, dark hair, dark eyes.  Populations: Asians, Indians, Caucasians
  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Never burn (dark brown skin, black hair, black eyes.  Populations: Creoles, Mulattos
  • Skin Type:Characteristics – Never burn (dark skin, black hair, black eyes.  Populations: Black-skinned (Africans)
