HOW YOU CAN ACHIEVE HEALTHY SKIN THIS WINTER

In today’s blog I would like to talk about skin health and how it can be affected by the cooler weather, sickness, harsh products and a poor diet. The skin equilibrium can be likened to the health of the gut, we know that if we drink lots of alcohol or take a course of antibiotics then our good bacteria in the gut that keeps our intestinal area balanced becomes overridden by the bad bacteria and we start to feel unwell.

We normally balance this with natural products like yogurt or over the counter products like Inner Health Plus. The skin is actually the largest eliminating organ in the body and its health is exactly the same as the gut, when it gets out of balance it starts to look red, tight, itchy or in some cases it just looks dull and aged. The most common things that cause this imbalance are a change in weather conditions (like winter!), harsh products (like scrubbing daily with course granules or overuse of AHAs), eating low fat diets, not ingesting enough “good fats” like avocado, nuts and fish oils or if we become run down or unwell.

NEST Skin, Body & Wellbeing believes that skin balance is the absolute first step in treating any skin condition and to achieve perfect balance, first we must start with identifying and repairing the skin’s water levels and the protective barrier that sits on the skin’s surface. The protective barrier (acid mantel) sits over the surface of the skin as a breathable non-oily protective film, this will lock in skin moisture and stop harsh irritating agents (which generally cause reactions with the skin) from penetrating. In most skins this barrier is not intact and it is for this reason the skin may start to feel red, tight, itchy or in some skins just look dull and aged.

NEST Skin, Body & Wellbeing believes the repair of the skin barrier and adding ingredients like Hyaluronic acid into the skin (in 3 main areas) will create plump, dewy, healthy skin and it is a vital step before adding vitamins or high-performance ingredients into the skin because if the acid mantel is damaged and the skin is dehydrated the high-performance ingredients will only do about 50% of what they should be doing and, in some cases, will cause sensitivity.

In Germaine de Capuccini skincare range, there is the Timexpert Hyaluronic range to treat this problem. This contains 3 molecular sizes of Hyaluronic acid; the larger ones sit on the surface to repair the barrier that has been damaged – this will instantly give the skin a feeling of comfort and the skin with look much healthier and plump. The medium size Hyaluronic acid fights nasty bacteria and balances skin health (just like inner health plus does in the gut) by helping to increase the healthy bacteria that naturally live on the skin (we have millions of these and when the “baddies over take the goodies” the skin is not happy!) And lastly the smaller size molecule of Hyaluronic acid infuses all the way down into the dermis and this tops up the natural production of Hyaluronic acid to keep our skin plump and dewy at a deeper level ……this is vital in preventing premature ageing as it keeps our collagen and elastin fibres healthy (and springy) to prevent wrinkles and lack of firmness.

In addition to the above, this amazing range of products adds essential fatty acids into the skin for those skin types that need it and helps control oil in the T-Zone for those dehydrated combination skins. There is something for everyone in this range and when the acid mantle is intact and is healthy and happy the skin will be in perfect balance and it makes it much easier to then move on and treat more serious skin conditions like pigmentation, wrinkles, lack of firmness etc.
